Our First Cornish Rex

Our first Cornish Perelli, came to us in 2005, we had little knowledge of the race, but knew they were very active and social & then we just loved the exterior of the Cornish Rex. We were looking for a social cat as our new family member, so that she would match our half breed (Siamese/domestic cat) Iza. We quickly realized that Iza wasn't company enough, we both work full time and Perelli seemed bored and not thriving at all.

We started our search for a friend for Perelli. After a long search we got in contact with the cattery "Magicbrook", they had a little tortoise girl that might be for sale. The breeder had considered to keep her themselves but after several good long talks we decided that Iris should come and visit us. That she did and luckily never left again!

Very quickly we were all consumed with the race and shows and genetics and type and wanting to learn more more more...

Cattery

Slowly the idea of breeding Cornish Rex grew within us, we had our doubts, not because we didn't have a vision. But because our cats first and most are family members and we can and will never replace a cat just because it no longer is used in breeding. Of course there can be reasons for replacing a pet - in our opinion it will only be if it's in the pets best interest not the owners best interest.

Not replacing cats and limiting the amount of cats living at home to an amount that ensures that the cats can thrive, also limits the breeding program. However we think that it's still possible, it will just take time to reach our goals but we are in no hurry.

Vision

The Cornish Rex type we personally prefer is the "American" type. With it's more extreme features we think it makes an more elegant cat. However there is features in a Cornish Rex that is just as important to us as long slender legs, a muscular body, large open well place ears  & a full & wavy coat. It is very important to us to use cat's in our breeding program that temperamental are social, curious and active. As much as a Cornish Rex is defined by it's exterior just as much it is defined on its behavior.

Who are "we"
As our names might indicate we are a Danish/Swedish couple, we recently moved back to Malmö after a few years in Stockholm and thrive in the Öresund region, were we have the best of both cultures right around the corner.
We have both grown up surrounded by animals and always had cats and dogs and horses and rabbits and... in our lives. Smila worked as a veterinary assistant for a year and learned many things which is useful to our cattery and our cats and we both joined in breeders courses and also learned and are still learning a lot from our more experienced mentors. So even though breeding is a never ending learning process we are well dressed for the responsibilities there comes with the joy of breeding Cornish Rex.
Our cattery name
Why did we choose "Wasa-Gathi"?
Well we wanted to have a cattery named which in some way referred to the silky, wavy coat that defines the race. As many cattery names already contained words like silky or waves or curly, we looked up other alternatives. The Japanese word "Wasa-Gathi" refers to Cotton Candy or fluffy soft context and we loved that expression so it became our first choice and luckily it was approved by Fife.
In 2008 we left Fife and joined TICA Through our cat club Viking Cats we are a part of the Northern Europe Region.
We also registred our cattery name in TICA and all our cats has been transfered to our new organisation.
Future kittens will be registratet in TICA.
